Art. 662

Sofá. Estructura de madera recubierta de espuma. Tapizado en terciopelo a dos colores.

This highly sophisticadet sofa was used by Alberto Cavalcanti in his interior set for the firm "L'Inhumaine" (1923) of Marcel L'Herbier. This film, which has been described as a "futurist carnival", apparead in the same year as the German "Metropolis" and the Russian "Aelita" and was a collaborative effort of some of the most important figures of the emerging modern movement (Mallet-Stevens, Fernand Leger, Puiforcat, Lalique, Claude Autant-Lara, Darius Milhaud). In 1925 it was used by Mallet-Stevens in his set for another film of L'Herbier, "Le Vertige". Chareau placed two of these sofas in the Living Room of his celebrated Maison de Verre (1928-1932). They were originally produced in velvet with a contrasting seat and back covered in either leather or tapestry. In the Maison the Verre the sofas have tapestry seats and backs based on a design by Jean Lurcat.
This sofa was clearly designed to be used as a kind of double chaise longue. Because of the contoured ends, two persons tend to face each other, facilitating conversation. It is obviously a direct descendant of the mid-eighteenth century French " canapé" à confident".
