This chair is generally attributed to Robert Mallet-Stevens, as a very similar chair appears in photographs of the kitchen of his Villa Cavrois, dating from 1932, and in the furnishings of a large restaurant that he designed for the “Salon des Arts Ménagers” in 1935.
However, Mallet-Stevens frequently incorporated designs by other designers into his interiors. Derek E. Ostergard, in his authoritative Bent Wood and Metal Furniture: 1850–1946 (American Federation of Arts, New York, 1987), disputes Mallet-Stevens’ authorship on stylistic and historical grounds.
Noting that the chairs shown in the early photographs of the restaurant feature details that differ from those of the chairs commonly attributed to Mallet-Stevens, Ostergard concludes that the actual designer remains unknown.
